The Malaya campaign ultimately led to the fall of Singapore which was a humiliating defeat for the allies and the British. But most of the fighting was actually undertaken by Indian and Australian troops. 15,000 Australians were captured in the fighting and they would suffered horrendously in Japanese hands. The ABC has some good articles pertaining to their treatment which can be found here.

Below is a map of Singapore from the period. You can see here how the commands were divided. Notice that the actual city of Singapore is at the very bottom of the island and the strait of Johor is at the top. The Japanese landings took place just to the south and west of Johor (the urban area at the top of the image).
