Episode 12: Man of Steel
Of all the dictators Joseph Stalin was certainly the lowest born. He was only two generations removed from archaic medieval serfdom and was far from any center of industry. He was little more than a peasant living on the periphery of an ageing and decrepit empire in the tiny village of Gori. Little is known about the first 5 years of Joseph’s life with his father, likely because he intentionally scrubbed the record. There exist accounts of him having been beaten so badly there was blood in his urine for a week. Another time he threatened his father with a knife to get him to stop beating his mother and once he even went to the police to get them to intervene and prevent his father from killing his mother.
